I'm looking at buying the (apparently even better) Zeiss 135 2.8, actually. theoretically, the more blades and the more curved they are, the smoother OOF areas should be rendered. I don't think anything general can be told about the relation between bokeh and diaphragm blades. To what extent there is similar story with other 5-blade lens - I can't say. but I find 50/1.8 bokeh very nice and smooth for close-up work with moderate contrast subjects. it's awful when shooting portraits with bright spots in background (they render as visible "spots" with what I call "funny" character that doesn't neccesarily match the subject). The Canon 1.8/50 standard lens produces strange OOF. albeit, another 135mm 6-blade lens I used - a Pentacon, had pretty bad bokeh with lot of "ghost repeatitions". My favourite is Sonnar 3.5/135 which has 6 blades and produces neat smooth OOF. have also 7-blade Sigma zoom (the 18-125) and its bokeh is quite OK - not too beauty, but not awful. "For lenses with a shorter focal length, such as the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM, try using smaller cutouts.Can't say anything general, but I pretty much like 6-blade apperture bokeh, and am not a big fan of 5 blades.

"It might take a bit of trial and error to work out the right size of cutout for the best effect, depending on the camera and lens you're using, but it'll be worth it in the end," adds Rosie. "For the shot of the steaming mug of love hearts (below) I made a heart-shaped cutout, and for my self-portrait I decided on a star." Both of these macro lenses have a very short minimum focusing distance, which also helps to give a really tight depth of field. Its short telephoto focal length enables a comfortable shooting distance, without crowding your subject, and it has a flattering, slightly flattened perspective. For a wider angle of view, the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 MACRO IS STM is a good choice, whereas for portraiture, the Canon RF 85mm F2 MACRO IS STM is perfect. Fast prime lenses are ideal and there are some excellent options, such as the Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM.ĮOS R System options include the Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM, which gives a very natural perspective. It's easy to produce bokeh by using a camera with a large image sensor, like in many Canon mirrorless cameras, or through using lenses with wide apertures or even telephoto lenses.Īny Canon camera is capable of producing images with good bokeh, and Rosie relies on her Canon EOS 200D (now succeeded by the Canon EOS 250D) to do just that, but a full-frame camera such as the Canon EOS RP or EOS R6 are also sufficient. You need a shallow depth of field, but this can be difficult to achieve if you're shooting with a smartphone. The ability to defocus foreground or background areas within a scene is vital for the bokeh effect.
